A passenger aboard Carnival Liberty died Wednesday night after reportedly going overboard while the ship was sailing between Celebration Key and Nassau in the Bahamas.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that the male guest is believed to have climbed over the balcony of his stateroom shortly after the vessel departed the company’s new private destination in the Bahamas.

“The Carnival Liberty crew responded quickly with a search effort and successfully retrieved him from the water, but he did not survive,” Carnival said in a statement. “We are providing support to the guest’s family who were traveling with him, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones.”

According to accounts shared online by passengers onboard, the crew immediately began emergency response procedures after the incident. Rescue boats were launched, and life-saving equipment was thrown into the water as the ship conducted a search in the dark waters. Guests onboard reportedly watched the rescue efforts unfold in shock as the operation continued through the night.
